Prison Dharma Program

Facilitate Transformation

In existence since 2011, the mission of our Prison Dharma Program is to bring the transformative potential of meditation practice to prison inmates. It is modeled on the methods developed by Fleet Maul, the Founder of the Prison Dharma Network, and his guide “Path to Freedom” with a focus on Zen meditation as taught by Zen Master Seung Sahn.

Through Meditation

The prison program operates several weekly or bi-weekly sitting groups in correctional centers across Massachusetts, including Bridgewater and Shirley. We also conduct regular one-day YMJJ retreats and precepts ceremonies for inmates.

Get involved

We are always looking for volunteers to ensure the continuity of this impactful program.

For more information on how to get involved, please contact the main organizer Mark O’Leary at moleary93@gmail.com.

Prospective participants should have the following:

1. A demonstrated commitment to their own Zen practice.

2. A basic familiarity with KUSZ practice forms, sitting, walking, and chanting.

3. Transportation. The facilities we serve are not easily accessible by public transportation.*

4. A willingness to commit to one or two evenings a month.**

*If interested in participating but unable to procure trasportation, contact nataliap@mit.edu to join a CZC carpool group to Bridgewater Correctional after sorting out all your paperwork with Mark O’Leary.

**For volunteers with retreat experience and 5 precepts, there is also an option to one-time volunteer for a prison YMJJ retreat, but space is limited due to DOC limitations.
